Gay Partington Terry is a Manx insomniac who grew up in northern Appalachia and now lives in Harlem. As a teenager, she assisted her father in his magic act and since then has worked as a waitress, factory worker, and welfare worker; catalogued tribal arts for Sotheby’s; volunteered in Margaret Mead’s office before she died; and taught tai chi and yoga. She has had poetry and short stories published in ezines, fantasy magazines and anthologies and wrote screenplays for “The Toxic Avenger” II and III. She has four grandchildren and is watched over by the ghost of a loyal Australian Shepherd. At heart, she thinks of herself as a slacker who enjoys teaching her grandkids “weird stuff.”

A thief, languishing in prison for stealing moments, escapes and becomes a chronometric fugitive. Women wait in a long, endless line, night and day, without knowing what is at the beginning of the line. An otherworldly marble called the Ustek Cloudy passes through the hands of Ambrose Bierce, Amelia Earhart, and D. B. Cooper just before they each disappear off the face of the earth. Whether they are called fantasy, magical realism, science fiction, or parodies, the stories in this collection—the first from Gay Terry—blend the real and the fantastic in an imaginative and mischievous way. Written in the tradition of Ray Bradbury, Angela Carter, and Edgar Allan Poe, these contemporary fables present remarkable characters trapped in unusual situations.

I’ll be chatting with Jim Freund, reading a story (or two), and maybe he’ll play some tunes I wrote words for. If you’re awake, you can call in and harass me; if not, it will be on the website: hourwolf.com for a week after.

Yesterday was my granddaughter’s fifth birthday. There will be a round of parties and celebrations this weekend, cupcakes and ice cream, gifts galore. Adriana is interested in many things and isn’t afraid to ask questions. (Neither am I and I’m somewhat beyond five.) Some of yesterday’s discussion concerned age numbers. Her father’s number, 37, is “not so old.” But her remark regarding my age number was, “that’s old.”
What does she know!!!
If I were a tree or a planet, I wouldn’t be thought of as old.
Or a star!
I have some of the same components of a star; we all do, but in different proportions, of course. In those terms, I’m an infant and I identify with infancy in some ways–I’m aware of an amazing world waiting to be explored. And I have a lot to learn.
Without some care and a great deal of moisturizer, parts of me could come to resemble (the bark of) a tree. Trees are formidable but I still prefer to think of myself as more of a star-like creature–not the sort that appears in movies and gossip columns, but the kind you see in the sky, one of many shining points of light. I assure you that my light hasn’t gone out yet.
My children, their spouses, and my grandchildren shine blindingly bright, and I have friends that are quite dazzling. All of this light reflects on me as I orbit about and adjacent to them, enhancing my own light (or so I hope). We may all be just a glint in the eye of the universe but isn’t it grand to sparkle?
Happy Birthday Adriana!
